about

Given we live in the ‘information age’, there is actually very little information out there about Noctû Recordings, The Forgotten Man produced by Mister Nick or this release. I kind of prefer this sometimes, it really means that it’s the music doing the talking.

I am not being a social media snob, I totally understand its part in the modern world of promotion and getting art out there, and I do love reading about labels and artists and their journeys, but it is nice once in a while to just sit back, know nothing about what you are going to listen to and just take it in.

Akashic starts with beautiful pensive strings gently building, a rolling snare helps the build, then hats, some melodic twinkling stabs find their way through. Then a broken style kick comes in. Followed by an almost squelchy bass. At 12:33 long this track has the time to subtly draw out its progressions, and it certainly does that with style.

The string pattern grows and intensifies then fades, different aspects of the track get the spotlight, some really nice moments throughout. It keeps a sort of housey beauty to the track but with a softly relentless techy undercurrent. A fantastic genre defying piece of music. It kind of reminded me of when I first got into house music in the early 90’s, some of the long drawn out Sasha-esque music, yet with an unmistakable tech funk hypnotic groove underpinning the whole thing.

Side B serves up a track called In my Mind first. Straight in with a broken beat, dreamy atmospheric pads and light percussion. The first part of the bass folds at the beginning of each 4 bar, then another part adds, whilst percussion rides like a wave up and down over the top. The break is stunning, subtle, beautiful, a sunrise or sunset would go very well with it.

The second track on Side B, and the final track of this trio is Renascent. I didn’t know what renascent meant, so I looked it up. Renascent – an adjective that means – becoming active or vigorous again; reviving. The tempo feels slower on this track, and nicely so. A synth loop creates a feeling of something building. A beautiful simple break beat comes in punctuated by some well placed sub bass. More synth patterns layer, further building that feeling of something waking up. Again, brilliant structure, build, progression to this track as with the others on the release and not overly obvious.

All in all a fantastic release, brilliantly executed, subtle yet effective. I shall play all of these tracks and will definitely be looking out for more from this artist and label.

London based, independant vinyl and digital label Noctu Recordings returns with its second release – Sky Birds of Ki EP by The Forgotten Man.

There is very little info out there about Noctu and The Forgotten Man, which is refreshing. I get the feeling they are more about letting their music do the talking rather than sharing what they had for breakfast and what they are wearing. They have already done some of that ‘talking’ with their first release NR001 – The Akashic EP, also by The Forgotten Man, a fantastic release well worth checking out.

Pulser certainly pulses, a huge synth line pulsates slowly, followed by another, followed by reserved percussion, that slowly builds until a solid four/four kick ties it all together. An acid sounding bassline comes in. It is as if it is talking to the Synths, following them up and down. Another synth led melody joins the conversation sprinkled over the top of the track. There’s a lovely breakdown and build, with great progression throughout.

Sky Birds of Ki starts with a rolling lo-fi, almost static like chatter, next is the acid bass that stabs and bounces up and down and in and out, and echoes around your mind. Beautiful clear percussion adds movement, and then the electro kick drops. A slightly slower pace than the A side. Lush synth chord stabs drip over the track, melodies come and go, pads rise and drop. Fantastic progression throughout, expertly programmed builds and drops, class track.

Beyond Sector 9 starts with no messing. This is the slowest track and perhaps my favourite of the three here. A straight simple yet effective heavy electro beat and percussion. Pads and rhythm section next. Dreamy, atmospheric pads flow around the structure of the beat, layers of melody, pads, stabs come and go. This has a hypnotic groove to it that I find irresistible, the relentless simple beat, the expertly programmed percussion that builds and drops the intensity subtly throughout.

Noctu Recordings proving that the label and The Forgotten Man are ones to keep tabs on. Three super quality cuts of house infused techno and electro. In my box for sure.
